The Macbeth Witches Essay Example For Students

The Macbeth Witches Essay In the first scene in act one we can see that the witches have some kind of psychic ability from when they predict that Macbeth will win the battle. The witches appear to be having some sport of shared vision. We can tell this from the second quotation- When the hurlyburlys done. When the battles lost and won. The witches clearly know that King Duncans side will win the battle. They also know when they will meet with Macbeth- There to meet with Macbeth. This addresses the theme of witchcraft and is Shakespeares way of letting the audience know that the witches have powers. We will write a custom essay on The Macbeth Witches specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The scene is set in the dark on the heath- a very open place, and the thunder and lightning in the background top it off as such. These key elements are Shakespeares way of conveying evil. In Elizabethan times this worked well on the audience who were convinced perhaps unlike a modern audience that these three women were witches from the very first line. Just before the end of the scene we see that the witches have familiars when the first and third witches call on them. This is also a key element in convincing the audience that the women are witches. The fact that they have familiars makes them seem evil and though perhaps a clichÃÆ' © now would have been very real for an Elizabethan audience. At the very end of the scene the witches do a sort of chant. Fair is foul and foul is fair: Hover through the fog and filthy air. This implies some sort of evil spell and leaves the audience in suspense until the next time we meet the witches. The way the witches behave here make us feel disturbed or uncomfortable although there are no descriptions of appearances as yet. At the opening of scene three again we hear thunder, not only does this create the spooky atmosphere as before, but it also confirms the witches predictions about the weather and makes the audience think that they have some sort of power over the weather. The first witch begins to tell a story of a sailors wife towards whom she has taken great umbrage. She tells the others how she will get back at the woman by torturing her husband. She says she will sail in a sieve to him at Aleppo. We then see that the witches can control the weather again when the others say they will help her by sending a wind. The first witch refuses and continues to tell of her wicked ways with the sailor. She possesses a pilots thumb which is quite disturbing for the audience and highlights the key theme of witchcraft again. Suddenly we hear a drum and once again can see that the third witch in particular may be psychic. A drum, a drum! Macbeth doth come Then the witches begin to chant a spell. When it is done they say Peace the charms wound up. This  confirms for us that it was a charm or spell and makes the audience wonder what it has achieved. When Banquo speaks we get the first idea of what the witches look like. What are these, so withered, and so wild in their attire, that look not like th inhabitants o th earth, and yet are ont? This tells us that whatever way the witches looked it was hard for Banquo to tell whether the witches are human or not. This implies that the witches were perhaps ugly or deformed. He tells us that the witches do not speak they merely raise their fingers to their lips. From this action we can tell that this is not normal. Two lords stand in front of the three women and yet they dont speak. This is mysterious also. Banquo appears to find this strange as would the audience and this is in keeping with the theme of mystery. .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c , .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c .postImageUrl , .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c , .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c:hover , .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c:visited , .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c:active { border:0!important; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c:active , .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1b6ccd48f0b874708f441f740b3b101c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The play Richard II by William Shakespeare is about a King who failed to perform his duties as King EssayThen the witches speak. They tell Macbeth that not only is he Thane of Glamis but also that he will become Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. Macbeth is startled by these predictions and although he seems frightened also seems to like these ideas. Banquo on the other hand is quite curious as to why they arent telling him anything. He asks them Speak then to me. The witches begin to talk in riddles and this although slightly confuses Banquo makes him very happy indeed. Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none. So all hail Macbeth and Banquo. These words keep in line with the psychic theme and even more mystery is added when the witches vanish in to thin air leaving Macbeth and Banquo to ponder the recent news. Overall in these two scenes we learn a lot about the three witches. That they have powers, how they look, how they behave and what that shows us about them. We also pick up on the key themes and how they are conveyed in the play.

How I felt on September 11, 2001

How I felt on September 11, 2001 On the morning of September 11, 2001 I awoke thinking that this would yet be another typical Tuesday; little did I know that this day would change my life forever. Seeing two of our countries largest towers collapse was the scariest thing I have ever faced. After witnessing the pain and sorrow of that horrible day I realized now the same nightmares we see on television across the globe are actually happening in our own backyard.Over the course of the week following the attack, coverage of the search for victims and perpetrators was everywhere. Like most Americans I am sure, I was not able to tear myself away from the television until the real damage became apparent. Despite the media?s pleas for blood donations, they weren?t needed. There were barely any intact bodies found- let alone survivors. There are two images I still to this day cannot seem to get out of my mind. The Statue of Liberty front shot, on Liberty Islan...One is of a man in a suit jumping out of a top floor and falling to his death. He reminded me of a father who had put on his tie that morning in attempt to go to work in attempt to achieve the American Dream, only to be forced between burning alive or being killed upon the impact of his body with the momentum hitting the concrete sidewalk. The other image is of a girl my age with her mother and younger brother holding up a picture of her father, describing him while sobbing and begging for people to look for him in the surrounding hospitals. She looked so horrified and heart broken. I wanted so badly for her father to come home and say, ?Everything is okay.? More than anything, the attack has made me sad. I am sad for the victims?...

Reflection paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 20

Reflection paper - Essay Example Unfortunately, without any consideration on the possible consequences that such an action or decision may have on the society as a whole. The chapter tries to outline the adverse impacts that a capitalist society has on the development of the entire community, whilst negatively getting biased towards such an economic system. To help create the picture of the situation, three persons are used, A, B and C, who put their funds in a use that best suits them. The example of landholding, whereby A leases its holdings to B. if checked into considerably, the after effect on the society mainly depends on the actual purpose that the ultimate user of the property puts it into. In other words, the output of the property determines its usefulness to the society in a capitalistic system. A property may be leased out or sold from one individual to the next, say A to B. for A, they shall have gotten the value worth their property, hence not suffered any loss. However, the problem remains in the sense that the ultimate output of the property is rolled to the society. In the case of A, the society benefits depending on the use to which they put the property. If they, for instance, decide to squander the money accrued in the sale or lease of the property, it remains up to the society. Another problem falls on person B, who has bought the property. They may have it channeled in a use that is beneficial to them, or worse still, have it put in an investment that may be considered unproductive. For example, say B has a series of employees, who manage their property. If the employees choose to rip him of the property or divert the usage, the loss shall have been suffered by him, yet the eventual loss stills fall on the community. In a capitalist society, the government also falls a victim of blame depending on the use to which its various assets and revenues are put. To help outline the precept from the perspective of the

Critically analyse the relative merits of the capital asset pricing Essay - 2

Critically analyse the relative merits of the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and empirical approaches to asset pricing (such as the Fama and French model) - Essay Example The CAPM is the graphically represented by the security market line (SML), which shows the expected rate of return for the individual security as a function of systematic risk (indicated by the beta of the security). The SML is shown in the following figure. Suppose an investment was made in a stock with a beta of 1.5. Assuming the return on the market portfolio at 12%, and the return on the one-year treasury bond benchmark rate to be 8%, the rate of return the investor may expect on the stock would be determined by application of the CAPM as: The stock investment is therefore expected to contribute a return of 14% to the investor’s portfolio, which is an improvement over the market return of 12%. The determination of return on the stock is important not only to balance out the portfolio, but also to enable the investor to determine the value of the stock. Knowing the value will enable the investor to decide whether or not he should purchase (or sell) the stock at the current market price. The expected rate of return is useful in the discounted dividend stock valuation method. Assume the stock’s regular per share cash dividend is $1 per annum without further growth, then the stock is priced fairly at: The price of $ 7.14 is indicative of the value of the investment at the time of consideration, and it may or may not be equal to the price of the stock presently prevailing in the market (exchange). This is then the basis for deciding what investment action to take in the asset. If the market price is presently $9 then the market overvalues the stock, and it would be a good time to sell the stock, but not a good time to buy. On the other hand, if the market price were $6, then the market underprices the stock and it would be a good time to buy, but not to sell, the stock. The CAPM is a theoretical model and like all theoretical models depends on some important assumptions. The following eight

Health Promotion Essay Example for Free

Health Promotion Essay Throughout history public health effort has been directed to the control of transmissible diseases, reduction of environmental hazards, and provision of safe drinking water. The Greeks believed that ill health developed from an imbalance between man and his environment, not unlike contemporary public health theories of multifactorial disease causations, in which environment plays a prominent role (pg 5). In the middle ages (AD 500-1500), epidemics of infectious disease spurred collective activities by communities to promote the public’s health, presaging the later formation of boards of health and public health departments In the 1800s. Medieval cities were run by councils who supervised disease prevention, sanitation, and protection of community health. The first public health revolution was the struggle against infectious disease in the late 1800s and early 1900s, which involved sanitation and immunization. The second revolution was spurred by the prevalence of chronic disease, including heart disease and cancer. In 1979 Healthy People marked a turning point in the approach and strategy for public health in the US. Americans adopted simple measures to enhance health including: Eliminating cigarette smoking, reduction of alcohol misuse, moderate dietary changes to reduce the intake of excess calories, fat, salt, and sugar. Other ways to enhance health include moderate exercise, periodic screenings such as high blood pressure and certain cancers. Healthy people recognized that in the past, individuals did not have complete control or responsibility over their health status in part because of socioeconomic and environmental determinants (pg 29). The differences between historical and contemporary health promotion is that they were both based from different time periods, where back then there preventions were based off the knowledge they had. In the present times we have gained and learned so much more especially from our history, that we now have better advanced ways to promote health with preventative measures learned and understood through findings and experience. The differences developed in order to continue with the promotion of health in a better advanced way, which will better the future for generations to come.
